Trail Conditions: Leaf covered up to about 2500' where a thin layer of snowy ice began to appear. From 3000' there was packed snow on the trail with the edges covered by a good 3" of snow.
Equipment needed: Stabilicers or microspikes. Layers of warm clothes.
Comments: Started with my good deed of the month, driving up to the York Pond Fishery so that Silverfox and Rocket21 could leave cars there for a traverse from Waumbek across the Weeks and down to the fishery.
5 of us started out from the Waumbek parking lot by 8.50 and headed up the leaf covered trail which obliterated rocks, holes and mud. By 3000' we donned our extra footwear and put on some extra layers as the wind had picked up and the temperature had fallen. Not much of a view from Starr King but the view from the point just past Waumbek was excellent with the Presidentials covered in snow and some cloud on all but Washington.
After a quick lunch Sleeveless and I headed down the trail while the other three set off for their destination. Surprised by the numbers of hikers we met both going up and coming down. Good to see so many out on a day which turned out to be much better than the forecasters had predicted.
