The Ethan Pond trail was quite wet and muddy in places from night rains and a brief rain while on the trail. The stream crossings presented no problems today even with the rain. Some recent work had been done clearing blowdowns and there were none all the way to the top of Willey. A few small spots of snow appeared around 4000', but this trail may be considered snow free. I met three hikers coming from Mt. Field. They reported two large patches of snow between Field and Willey that were at least 3' deep.
The Willey Range trail is very steep and relentless. Today it was also very slippery. The wooden steps were very slick. Lauky handled the stairs like a pro.
Mt. Willey was not on our short list, but it is on Ed's list of the ten top trails without a view. With no views today, it seemed like a good time to do it.
