After a Bond Traverse on Saturday, Gillian and I and JF got a late start and decided to do a hike to Mt. Wolf via the AT from Kinsman Notch on Sunday. I had heard that there was a lot of puds on this trail but the map didn't indicate this so we figured it was fine.
After hitting the White Mountain Bagel -- they did NOT have Jalapeno cream cheese on Saturday but they HAD it on Sunday -- we started out at around 10:15. Mostly hardpacked snow but it got deeper as the day went on and less broken out. The funny thing about this trail though was how many ups and downs there were -- reminded me a lot of the Long Trail. It seemed like there was 8 false summits. Overall it wasn't so bad although the false summit part was annoying but more because I wanted to get home somewhat early to watch the Super Bowl and it seemed like the trail was neverending considering it was like 4.5 miles to the summit.
Once on the top of Mt. Wolf we had a snack. My Tabasco sauce had frozen overnight so I had to eat boring pizza with no tangy, spicy good stuff on it. I did have a nice 21st Amendment IPA however -- good IPA in a can; had two of them the day before on the Bonds -- which was a plus. At this point I realized that I had not had a single sip of water on the hike so far so I took out my nalgene bottle to get a drink. The problem was there was floaters in it, pretty serious ones too. No way I was going to drink that no matter how thirsty I was. I guess I should have washed the durn thing out this year. So we hiked out and I was kinda psyched because the only liquids I had all day was a beer and I felt pretty good. See, my beer actually turned out to be my safety drink, a life-saver of sorts. I doubt I'd be here writing this if it weren't for the beer.
The hike out was pretty easy. It was a cold and windy day but pretty uneventful. I thought it was fun enough for a Sunday afternoon so no complaints from me. Maybe Gillian had an issue or two with the puds but oh well... good to get out!
