Trail Conditions:
Hancock Notch, Cedar Brook, and Hancock Loop Trails are all well broken out, but the top layer of snow is not consolidated. This made the ascent up North and the descent down the South slide very difficult. We used the derriere express for most of the steep sections of the descent. Some water crossings remain partially open, but easily passable.
Equipment:
Mostly snowshoes; some people barebooted part of the way and John used microspikes to the loop trail, but snowshoes were the way to go most of the route, especially on the ridge walk between the summits. I had to switch to crampons half-way up the ascent in order to get traction.
Comments:
This was a pretty grueling hike. We started around 9 am and finished at 4:45, very tired and wet from sliding in the snow and having trees drop big glops of snow on us.
