I had planned to drive up Zealand Rd and do a loop to Zealand Hut and Mt Hale via the Zealand, Lend-a-Hand, and Hale Brook Trails, but Zealand Rd was too slick for my car and I couldn't get up the first hill past the bridge.
Instead, I parked at the lot on Rt 302 and hiked up Zealand Rd to the Sugarloaf Trail and climbed both Middle and North Sugarloaf, and then headed back to my car (after which I drove to Franconia Notch to climb Mt Pemigewasset - see trip report).
I had new stabilicers that I used on the trail which were helpful due to snow over ice. My poles also helped. There were several inches of snow on Zealand Rd and maybe 6 to 8 inches higher up. On the summit of Middle Sugarloaf, there was one area of drifting that was at least a foot and a half.
I saw hunter's cars but I didn't see any hunters on the trail nor did I hear any shots.
