Date of Hike: Wed. Apr. 21, 2010
Trails: Bushwhack, N. Twin Tr., N. Twin Spur, Twinway, Frost Trail,
Gale River Trail, Beaver Brook Ski Trail.
Parked at end of Little River Rd. and took the path to the N. Twin Trailhead. Mostly bare ground to the third crossing on N. Twin Trail. Bushwhacked around the first two crossings. Water crossing was easy with wet boots. Snow line started shortly thereafter.
Bare booted for about a half mile before switching to snowshoes. The snow got deeper the higher in elevation. A firm base underneath the soft new snow from the last storm. It didn't appear that anyone had been on the trail since then.
From the col on the N. Twin Spur the trail was hard to follow at times, but the snow pack was such, that it was easy walking between the trees with snowshoes. Bare booters would be in trouble here. Fairly soft snow all the way to the Hut but good for snowshoeing.
Trail to Galehead easy to follow. Gale River trail had it's share of snow until just before the upper crossing, where we took our snowshoes off. Water crossings on the Gale River Trail were easy, and bare ground all the way out and back to Beaver Brook.
Great day with very warm temps and sun. There were six of us, part of Hiker Ed's Grid group.
