Date of Hike: Sat. May 22, 2010
Trails: North Twin, North Twin Spur, Twinway, Frost Trail, Garfield Ridge, Gale River Trail
North Twin Trail was dry with some wet and muddy areas. Bushwhacked around the first two crossings. The Third crossing was running a little high, but rock hoppable with wet boots.
Intermittent rail started at 3800' and a good snow pack started around 4200 ft. and ended at the first view. The rail and snow pack were firm and postholing was at a minimum. Lots of blowdowns that Bill Marcotte, Donna Dobbins and I cleared.
From the North Peak to the Col there was some rail, but firm and easy to navigate around. From the Col through the trees to the open ridge there was still a pretty deep snow pack, but firm and solid.
From the ridge to the South Peak mostly bare ground with some patches of snow. From the South Peak down to the hut, there was still some snow pack and rail, but easy to deal with. The Frost Trail to Galehead had some patches of snow, but mostly bare ground.
From the hut over to the Gale River Trail it was a mixture of bare ground and snow pack. From the Jct. some snow rail for a way down then it was bare ground the rest of the way down. Gale River Crossings were also running high, but doable.
We bare booted the whole way and had no problems. Nice day to be out on the trails today. Nice talking with Doug Hunt today on the trail. The hut is open.
This will probably be the last trail conditions report from me until Fall. Most of the snow is melting fast and in a week everything will be clear.
