Trail Conditions - DEEP snow, up to a foot of new powder over a deep, icy base. Trail was partially broken out for first 3/4 miles, but unbroken after that and definitely tiring. Small bent over trees obscurred the trail and made it more of a bushwhack than a hike. We received several stingers in the face from these nasty trees. Trail markers were either non-existent or buried under the snow after first 3/4 mile. Stream crossing was extremely difficult due to collapsing snowbridges and deep snow over ice on the banks.

Special Equipment Required - Snowshoes for stream crossing and beyond. Crampons may have been helpful in a few nasty spots.

Comments - It is quite possible that we were not on the trail proper much of the way. Still, we reached the foot of the Nancy Cascades. We turned around after trying a few routes to the right of the falls. They were all steep and icy and we decided not to go any further. We also did not want to attempt crossing the stream at the pool due to high water and collapsing snowbridges, but it sounds like that was the right way to go, after re-reading the AMC Guide. Oh well, better safe than sorry. It was still fun and the weather was fantastic with crystal clear skies and mild temps. Looking forward to trying Nancy again after the snow melts a bit. It will be interesting to see if the trail is blazed.

Always fun hiking with my friend Ray.
