Saturday is National Public Lands Day - Free entrance to national parks, no permits required for parking in national forests or other public lands.

There are some trail maintenance opportunities listed for NH but none for VT and only a few for Maine

We enjoyed free entry to Lassen Volcanic National Park in CA last August. The entry-free day might have been why we had trouble finding a campsite. Ended up having to pay afterall when we left the main park area and drove over to hike Lava Cone and Prospect Peak, as that was the only way to get there. Worth it, though...

It seems silly to do trailwork which can be done anytime on one of the few free days so I went elsewhere. There was a large notice on the fee tube that parking was free 9/25, I watched a guy put money in an envelope and stick it in and read the notice afterward.

Next free day is November 11, originally it was for veterans only but the FS had no good way to get proof so now it's for anybody. This isn't the first or last time that everybody benefits from the effort of veterans :)
