I thought perhaps some of the new programs here at Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany (where I am a full-time educator) might be of interest to some folks here on VFTT. Many are free (Brown Bag Lunches and Saturday guided snowshoe hikes) while some cost a moderate fee. Eco-Forum Brownbag Lunch Speaker Series
You’ve heard of the Commonwealth Club of CA, the Cleveland City Club Forum, and the National Press Club Lunches – Now it’s the TMCC Eco-Forum! You bring the lunch; we’ll provide the food for thought! Join us each month for presentations by noted experts on a wide variety of provocative environmental issues followed by a question and answer period. Admission is free. January 11, 2007, Noon – 1pm Canada’s Baffin Island – A Changing Arctic Landscape?
Speakers: Robert Del Mar, Engineer, LEED AP, Solar Design Associates
Eric Morgan, PhD, Asst. Prof. of Environmental Communication,
New Mexico State Univ.
Topic: This past summer, Rob & Eric trekked two weeks through Akshayuk Pass in Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. They will share stories and images from the trip, discuss global climate change in the region, and talk about the quickly changing Arctic landscape and the influence it is having on Native Peoples.
Adult Nature Courses (ANC)
These 4-week courses provide an in-depth look at various natural science and cultural history topics. Individuals with all levels of experience are encouraged to enroll. Each session usually meets one day/week for 2.5 hours combining time in our laboratory classroom and library with field studies as well as a weekend field trip. Through lectures, slideshows, hands-on exploration, guest speakers, and selected readings, ANC participants will examine each study area. Reservations and $25 non-refundable deposit required.
Winter Ecology
Instructor: Dick Fortin
Dates: January 17, 24, 31 & February 7 - 6:30-9:00 pm, Field Trip: January 27
Course tuition: $95 M, $110 NM
Naturalist Dick Fortin will make you think like an animal surviving the harsh New England winter. We will examine different strategies for survival, learn mammal tracking, and put our nature-sleuthing skills to the test while unlocking the stories in the winter forest. This course will also cover how plants in our region acclimatize to the cold.

Tin Mountain Programs are open to the public. Donations of $3 per person or $5 per family are greatly appreciated. Join storyteller/naturalist Dick Fortin in the Tin Mountain Conservation Center Nature Program "Logging Life" on Thursday, January 11 at 7 PM at the Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center in Albany. Dick will demonstrate old logging tools while spinning some yarns and sharing tales describing 19th century life in a North Country logging camp.
Snowshoe Exploration of the Old Town Road to Dundee

Enjoy a snowshoe hike while exploring of the Old Town Road from Jackson to Dundee in the Tin Mountain Conservation Center Nature Program on Sunday, January 14th from 10 AM through 2:00 PM. Stone walls and other historic remnants as well as animal tracks abound. Meet at the Tin Mountain Jackson Field Station on Tin Mine Road at 10 AM. Bring your own snowshoes or borrow ours, dress warm, bring a lunch, and please call 603-447-6991 for reservations and details.
Stars on Skis

Co-sponsored with the Mt. Washington Valley Touring Center
Join Star Wizard Matt Krug on cross country skis under the star lit skies of the Scenic Vista in The Tin Mountain Conservation Nature Program (co-sponsored with the Mt. Washington Valley Touring Center) "Stars on Skis" on Friday, January 19th at 7 PM. Matt will point out the winter constellations and shares star legends for the season. The evening culminates with a delicious dessert at the 1785 Inn. Meet at the 1785 Inn in North Conway. Cost: $15, TMCC member $12. Price includes an all-day trail pass and dessert. Saturday Weekly Guided Hikes: 10AM - 12PM
Join TMCC staff exploring the Nature Learning Center trails through the seasons. We will visit the historic granite quarry, lunch rock, and the beaver pond. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Winter hikes will be on snowshoes when conditions permit.
