Trail Conditions:
Caribou Valley road gets worse as you proceed- I parked my sub-compact 2.5 mi up. 4wd's w/ clearance can park in small lot just before metal bridge.Past here washouts get bigger and bridges worse.
A.T. crossing is flagged but obscure about 0.4 past bridge.Keep walking the road.
At 1st (R), bear (L) or straight on rd. w/small cairn, then (R) at "T"- @ 2 miles past bridge.
Little cairns sporadically let you know you're on- you'll bear (R) in upper meadow, then (L) @ cairn w/ ski pole & flagging. Look for cairn on (L) of trail marking entrance to woods herd path, flagged and blazed thru thick firs to summit. Use care on descent, easier to lose route going down ( I did, but found it when moose path petered out).
Trail is reasonably dry.
-S.Crocker-Redington herd path: I would've taken this the previous day had it not been
3pm when I got back to South Crocker from North. Walking down the first few hundred yards was as easy to follow as the "woods" portion of the other route. Rocket 21 went this way in July and another member posted a detailed description this summer of the Crocker-Redington bushwhack.
Comments: Met some Crockers -bound hikers high on Redington who had missed the A.T. crossing (driving a jeep) and were surprised to hear what mtn. they were on.
Definitely study the maps before you head in here...
I gave them my hand drawn map and they went off to get Redington since they were most of the way up !!
Redington summit has clearing w/ nice views and a new register in the canister (righthand side of clearing) courtesy of windpower co.
Congratulations to Denise Penn who was on top 2 days previously and registered, as did I.
