Trail Conditions: Hancock Notch Trail, Cedar Brook Trail, and the section of the Hancock Loop Trail from Cedar Brook Trail to the place where it splits are all fairly well packed, with snow bridges over most stream crossings. The section of the Hancock Loop Trail from the split to the top of North Hancock had 4-6 inches of snow over an icy crust. The ice got thicker the higher I went, to the point where I wasn't getting sufficient traction with my snowshoes and had to bushwhack to the top. It was a little hard to follow the trail from the top of North Hancock over to South Hancock, due mainly to the depth of snow and the occasionally sparse blazes.
Special Equipment Required: Given the snow depth, snowshoes are essential. If I were going up North Hancock first, I'd definitely want crampons and potentially an ice axe. I'd want ice skates, skis, or a sled if I were going down it.
