The Hancock Notch trail is fairly smooth underfoot. There is one easily stepped over blowdown. The Cedar Brook trail varies from smooth in places to very rough. The loop trail up to the north peak and down from the south peak fairly rough under foot. Both go basically straight up and down.

The ridge trail between North and South Hancock is fairly smooth. There are a number of bogs, especially between the middle peak and the south peak. A herd trail has formed around one bog which I suspect may one day be the trail. Sometimes the better part of wisdom is to admit that a mistake was made in laying out a trail and then move on. The stream crossings today, which were numerous, were all fairly easily done. The most interesting is the crossing as you head up to the north peak. There was a fair bit of water flowing to my right, but it disappeared into the ground just before the crossing. We crossed on dry ground. I felt like Moses crossing the Red Sea.

There is a stream crossing at the intersection of the Cedar Brook and Hancock Notch trial. When heading north, just before the next crossing there is an area where there has been a lot of illegal camping and herd trails have formed which can fool you into heading uphill in an easterly direction. :( Make sure you continue north across the stream. To avoid confusion the trail could use a bit of marking at this point. On the way back, I met a ranger right at that spot and showed him the problem. He said he would pass on the info to the AMC.
