Date of Hike: 3 March 2013
Basic route: North Twin Trail (old route from 7 Dwarves) to summer trailhead of North Twin Trail (current route) to North Twin spur to Twinway to Galehead Hut (Frost Trail momentarily) and out the Gale River Trail.
Trail Conditions: all trails had relatively soft snow and fresh powder/blown in snow. The old route of the North Twin Trail (from Little River Road) had been passed the day before so was easy to follow. Same with the North Twin Trail and the spur trail over to South Twin. A few inches fresh snow in the track. From South Twin, there was little evidence left of any recent hikers until we got to Galehead Hut where fresh tracks had been through. The ridge had a foot or so of new powder but was easy going. The Frost Trail sign was buried 90% but we found it. However, after searching for the route up the summit for a bit and realizing it was getting late, we bailed on Galehead. Gale River Trail was a breeze on the descent.
Water crossing were all bridged. The first two on North Twin Trail were skipped as usual by following the BW route along the river. Others were no problem in snowshoes. Blowdowns here and there but nothing causing real problems.
Special Equipment Required: snowshoes were necessary for floatation; snow was deep along the ridge. crampons/spikes never came out of Bernerbabe's pack and I left mine in the truck after not needing them the day before. Snow is deep and soft again.
Comments: Congratulations to Bernerbabe on #42, 43 of the 48! We made an honest attempt at Galehead but that will have to be another day. A great day out in the mountains! Will post a couple pics later in a trip report.
