Lonesome Lake Trail to hut: Well packed. We bare booted all the way and walked directly across the lake to the hut, which had lots of visitors the night before.
Fishin Jimmy was also well packed. We bare booted until we hit the first really steep and icy section and there put on crampons. The Kinsman Ridge Trail had more post holes but was still good with crampons, despite several inches to about 2 feet of new drifted snow in places. The overlook ledge just below the summit was great - protected from the westerly wind, in full sunlight, with the truly awesome Franconia Ridge right in front of us, against a cobalt blue sky. Very cool! As we adjusted equipment and ate lunch we were joined by a group of 4 who had come up the Mt. Kinsman Trail from Rt. 116.
Going down, John chose his nifty MSR snowshoes with the toothed rails, while I stayed with crampons. Both worked. At the hut I switched to snowshoes as well and we returned across the lake and back down to The World. A beautiful day and a great hike.
Time up: 3 hours.
Time down: 2.5 hours.
