North Kinsman, South Kinsman via Mt. Kinsman Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail
Date of Hike: Thursday, April 2, 2009
Trail Conditions: Spring snow, slush ice, blue ice, mud, wet powder
Special Equipment Required: Light traction
Comments:
Snowbanks on the road have melted, so parking is a bit easier now.
Mt. Kinsman Trail to first water crossing - wet/muddy bare ground, blue ice, slush ice. First water crossing open, slightly tricky yet doable rock hop.
Spring snow after first water crossing to Bald Peak junction. Second and third water crossings still bridged.
Monorail above Bald Peak junction to Kinsman Ridge junction - was still strong enough for me to leave snowshoes on my pack without postholing. I removed a few blowdowns, but one or two remain. 1-2" new snow.
Kinsman Ridge Trail to North Kinsman - 1-3" new snow, postholing wasn't an issue. No blowdowns.
Kinsman Ridge Trail to South Kinsman - 1-3" new snow, postholing wasn't an issue. About 1/3rd of the way to South Kinsman, someone dropped a duece on the trail, only about a foot from the packed footbed, and covered it with toiletpaper. Beware!
