Tuesday, 12/22/09. Trail was well broken. Stream crossings: most rocks had snow on them for boots/snowshoes to grab onto. The ice, when I dared, held. I barebooted til the steeps. Wasn't sure whether to change to crampons or snowshoes. Went w/ the shoes. There were frequent rocks still showing, so be careful glissading down.
At Jct. on the ridge, ~3500',trail from Waterville Valley (Livermore Tr.?) had not been used recently, but a furrow still showed. Between N. & M. Tripyramid, the Sabbaday Trail looked recently used. When I started hiking, there was a SUV at the Sabbaday t/h.
It was breezy on the Kancam, but once in the woods, it was calm. Even on N.TP. it was calm. On the way over to M.TP. it got just a little breezy. On the way back to NTP, the breeze disappeared, probably at around the same spot it started on the way over.
I talked to a ranger at the Lincoln tourist info ctr, and asked about supposed logging near the Sabbaday and PBB trs. He was very helpful, making a couple of calls to get info. The logging hasn't started yet. I gave him my name and e-mail for an update on when any activity might start. I'll post that here when I hear.
Great start to Winter 2009-2010!
And here's the info from ranger Christopher Roukes, who got back to me even before I first posted this report! :
Hi Mark - Hope your hike went well the other day. I just talked with Ken Jaeger at the Saco District(the White Mountain National Forest Disrict doing the timber sale project you were con cerned about.) He is in charge of the administration of that sale. This sale is divided into three parts - only one of which is active at the moment. The Downes Brook/ UNH Trail/MtPotash Trail parking lot area is in the active area. Those using those trails or the XC Ski trails in the area will see/hear some logging activity. Pine Bend Brook Trail is in a different part of the sale which probably won't be active this winter. Even when that portion of the sale is active, the sale is arranged with buffer zones along the trail. Other than a skidder path which crosses the trail , logging activity will not be too obvious. I hope this is helpful. Don't hesitate to call Ken if you have further questions - he can give you better detail . The Saco District(Conway-at the east end of the Kanc) is 603-447 - 5448.
