On Sunday, January 10 I hiked the Monoosnoc Trail from the West Street parking lot to the Wachusett overlook just south of South Monoosnoc Hill. The trail was snow covered the entire way, in some ways making the hike easier. The ice that covers the trail as you head up to the first overview was fully snow covered, giving much better traction. I had spikes on, but didn't really need them except for on the road heading up to the water tower.
Most of the trail has had at least one hiker on it, and in some places was decently packed down. There were sections that had evidence of an ATV and even a sledder. The section of the trail heading up South Monoosnoc Hill had only one set of footprints ahead of mine, and the snow had drifted in sections so that it was nearly knee deep. The slog up the hill was a bit tiring, but I arrived at the overlook at sunset, and it was a beautiful view over the Wachusett Ski area.
Originally I was going to park on Elm Street to do the mid to south section, but there were no plowed parking spots.

If you'd like to meet before doing so, I'd be happy to meet with you. This year is my first foray into Winter hiking, and I am loving it. My email address is [email protected]. Thanks.
