Northville Placid Trail - end to end
Start: Upper Benson - August 29, 2004
End: Lake Placid - September 8, 2004
11 days - 10 nights
Number in party: 2
Overnights:
1) Silver Lake (tent)
2) Whitehouse (tent)
3) Fall Stream (tent)
4) West Canada Creek (lean-to)
5) Cedar River Flow approx 1.8 miles beyond Carry lean-to (tent)
6) Lake Durant (tent)
7) Lake Durant (tent)
8) Catlin Bay - Long Lake (tent)
9) Plumleys - Long Lake (lean-to #2)
10) Duck Hole (lean-to #2)
Trail:
Overall the trail is in good condition based on the amount of rain we had over the summer in upstate NY. For our hike the
sections from "Spruce Lake to West Canada Creek" and "Duck Hole to Wanika Falls" were the toughest. Trail was extremely wet (lots of mud) and the footing was tough especially in the afternoon when you are tired.
To compound the complexity of the Duck Hole to Wanika Falls section - there is a good deal of overgrowth (basswood) on the trail which makes seeing your way somewhat of a challenge. This overgrowth is also prevalent in the section between Tirell Pond and Long Lake where you cross the ridge. Descending the ridge was tough because of the overgrowth.
Miscellaneous:
Mailed provisions to Piseco post office. My wife dropped off last set of stuff at Lake Durant - we arrived 1 day early there, so had to spend two nights (was a nice break).
Lean-to's in rough shape - Catlin Bay #1, Cold River # 1,2 (we did not see all of the lean-tos).
Weather overall was great. We had two days where it rained off-on all day. Two cloudy but rainless days and all the rest were sunny with low humidity.
Vlei crossing (trail under water) between McCane's and Stephen's Pond was about mid-thigh deep.
Also - perhaps we were expecting some designation, but the trail leaves the road at McCane's by walking up Mr. Macaluso's driveway and past his garage. Only indication we saw was 'No Trespassing" signs. I guess that makes sense since they don't want anyone day hiking from there anymore. Just felt funny walking up someone's driveway (even though we had emailed our trip schedule to owner).
As I have read in other's write-ups on this trip - it is not to be taken too lightly. It was more strenuous than I anticipated, although you do adapt quickly to the effort. First few days are tough.
