Northville Placid Trip Report 8/22/04-9/3/04

Hi everyone!

These things always take me longer than I think they will... but I have finally posted the new trip journal and pictures from my latest Northville Placid hike on my website. There are still some kinks to work out and some re-writing to do.... but it's presentable.

Hope you enjoy.

Dave, Great photo's and journal. The Northville-Placid Trail and paddling in the Floodwood and 7 carries area are my favorite places in the Adk's.

Great stuff Dave! Sounds like you guys had a great trip! You had some beautiful shots in there. The pic and story on West Canada Lake put you right there! (It is my favorite spot to swim in the ADKs!). You have a great way with words...keep it coming!

Hey Dave -

I enjoyed your report from a couple of years ago. I look forward to reading this one.

I spent ten days in Colorado in early September... I'm still working on the trip report. At least I'm up to Day 8 now!

Great report and pics, Dave. You and your friend write very readable stuff. I also dug that Loon call recording! Reading about a distance hike is a nice contrast since so many threads are concerned with peakbagging and gear. By coincidence I happened to have just read an essay about the N-P Trail the day before I read your report. The piece was "Across the Adirondacks" by Anne Labastille and it's in an old book called "The Whole Hikers Handbook" edited by William Kemsley Jr. Apparently, the essay originally appeared in the National Geographic of May 1975.
If you can ever get a copy of this, it's a fine piece, and there's tons of other great writing in the anthology as well.

Matt

P.S. Not that there's anything wrong with talking about peakbagging and gear. :D

Hey, thanks everyone! I am glad you enjoyed it... cause I sure had a blast putting it together.

I kind of get a kick out of comparing the quality of the photographs on the first half of the trip, to that of the second. They degraded quite a bit as we ran into our camera troubles.

The first half of the trip was shot with an older digital camera... and it did a fairly nice job. We had to repair it around day 3 as the battery cover snapped off (duct tape!) and then it finally went to that electronic recylce bin in the sky when it was accidentally dropped in Stephen's Pond. The very next day we picked up some cheap disposables.... but those were destroyed when I had to wade belly button deep through a stream crossing. The day after that we picked up some more disposable cameras.... and they account for the last few days of pictures. As you can tell, the quality of those photos are rather cruddy.

Well, the follow up to the camera adventures is that I bought Jess a nice "weather resistant" digital camera for the holidays. We've joked that for our next thru-hike we might consider buying the under water case that is available for it. :)

Take care everyone!

I just gotta say "THANK YOU" for bringing back so many fond memories of my NPT thruhike . . . you and Jess are both wonderful writers.

I hiked the NPT and realized my LOVE of distance hiking and then I hiked the LT to decide if I could someday attempt the AT so keep at it . . . :D

And someday in the next few months I hope to put together my LT hike report . . . it is so hard to find the time :)

Reading your report has inspired me however . . . :)
