trails: bushwhack
conditions: we drove an unnamed road that leaves corser brook road about 2.3 miles from rt. 26 for roughly 2 miles to a point northwest of the summit where we parked at the base of an old cut. snow and ice on the road making 4wd and cautious driving necessary. we headed directly up the cut through scrappy hardwood growth before picking up a nice game path that led us up to near the top of the cut. from there we continued up through decent, but occasionally scrappy woods up to a false bump then into a small sag before climbing up to the broad summit area. up to six inches of snow in the woods. a fair amount of blowdown around the summit and we ended up walking by the recognized highpoint and checked out a couple different bumps before doubling back and finding it. we happily followed our tracks back down.
equipment: blaze orange highly recommended.
comments: nice second bushwhack (south crystal earlier) in the corser brook area. continued cold and windy conditions with the wind almost seeming to ramp up a bit making us feel a bit vulnerable in the heavily swaying trees around the summit. one fair sized tree came down relatively close while we were up there. lots of fresh moose sign between the false bump and the summit. thanks to jeremy for some skilled driving on the icy roads and for some good bushwhacking on a less than stellar day.
