February 1, 2013. Hiked up Ranger Trail on Smarts Mtn.
Trail conditions: wet, icy, horrible in places. AT might have been better for the first section, but up high the trail was a glorified ice climb. I never knew this place was so wet. Stream crossings small but hard, High water and unreliable ice. You won't die but your feet may get wet. Colder temps will help.
Equipment... traction, waders, sense of humor... I wore microspikes and was ok until after the junction with the AT ( though not happy; the trail is a half frozen stream). After negotiating several ice bulges/bushwhacks, I finally reached one I thought I could not handle, and just about .2 from the summit. Crampons would have done the trick, but I did not have them and this mtn probably not worth it.
We need snow!!
