Not route related but one thing I don't miss is hiking all day in leathers and carrying Sorel Pac boots to stay warm at night. At least when Super Gaitors and down booties came into vogue it got better not having to have two sets of boots. Some wore Sorels only but I always missed the support of a stiffer boot on the trail. Plastic Boots were a major break through even if you walked like Farnkenstein. Look at what we have now. Footwear really has evolved over the last 40-50 years.
