You're correct, Tom - it was a means to an end. I needed a route to keep him as safe as possible, and doing the slide in winter was simply not safe. And I remember the time I was with you, Cath and Brutus and we turned back on Tom. My records show it was March 10, 2005. I had just completed single-season round of the 4's in winter, and my legs were like rubber!
What I thought was cool about Brutus was that when he decided that it was time to stop, he would sit on top of our snowshoes. 🙂

This thread has long since drifted away from the subject heading, so I'll extend the discussion of 'trailless' peaks in the Adirondacks.

It used to be that unofficial trails were not shown on the ADK's 'High Peaks' map, or if they were shown, they were depicted as a series of dots, unlike the official trails. The map now seems to be showing just about everything (but still using dots for the unofficial trails). Last August, because I'm a bit fussy about carrying the most up-to-date map, I bought the 2024 printing of the 15th edition, even though I had the 2021 printing. As I was paying for it at HPIC, I asked the fellow there what changes it showed, and he said that it was basically the same, except for the addition of a couple of lean-tos. Not so. Later, as I studied the map, I found that it showed the entire unofficial trail up Mt Grace from 73; the 2021 printing showed only about 3/4 of the way from 73, and even that was an innovation. Previously, the route was known only to the cognoscenti. (I haven't yet hiked it myself but intend to do so next summer.)

That 'High Peaks' map is one of the worse hiking maps I've seen, but it's better than it was when it used English measure on one side and metric on the other. I fear what will happen with the AMC's maps now that they've let go Larry Garland.

Several years ago, (10/01) when I lived in Vermont, I had two ADK peaks to finish my 111 list - Whiteface & Esther. There was a bit of snow on the ground, and I carried two different ADK maps, both of which contained errors/omissions. My intent was to finish on Whiteface, but as I was focused on getting both peaks, I blew by the herd path to Esther, and soon found myself working around the cone on Whiteface. It was a beautiful day, and the sun had come out, creating excellent views. I was careful on the way down so I wouldn't miss the herd path to Esther, and it was easy enough to find. It was a nondescript summit. I'm a bit reluctant to say that because Grace was/is held in such high regard by hardcore ADKers and my apologies to any ADKers I may have offended.

IMHO, the quality of maps for northern NE is quite good, due largely to the efforts of Larry Garland who seems to have worked himself out of a job, unfortunately.
