Some might already know (and some might not) that there’s a whole series of AMC trails just a bit east of Gorham with trailheads on North Road (the road turning off Route 2 just a few hundred feet from the trailhead for the Rattle River Trail).
One of the many trail combinations off the North Road is the Austin Brook Trail/Yellow Trail combo which takes you on a short 1.2 mile journey to Mt. Crag. This mountain weighs in at only 1,412 feet, but the views from there are probably far beyond what many folks might expect for such a tiny-tot of a mountain.
This entire hike (including time to explore the summit area) can be done in under 2 hours. So, most likely you’d want to plan on doing some other hike(s) in this area in addition to this one. But, if you’re in this general vicinity, it’s worthwhile to invest a wee bit of time to check out this little mountain. Below are a couple of photos from Mt. Crag.
There’s a terrific view looking W/SW toward the Northern Presidentials
There’s also a nice eastward view looking down the Androscoggin Valley
OK, the next photo shows what Zman & I found upon our arrival at the summit of Mt. Crag. No, I’m not making this up, nor are Zman & I responsible for this. Someone decided to create a “text” message using moose droppings. Well, we assume it was a person. We don’t think that moose can spell messages by “ex-spelling” their droppings (if so, this would give a whole new meaning to “moose sign”!!)![Roll eyes  ](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
