Beautiful day on Tuesday, been getting lucky this winter with the weather. Standard Lincoln Woods, Black Pond Bushwhack, Lincoln Brook, Brutus Bushwhack, Owl's Head Path Route. Took the low road on Black Pond bushwhack and found it to be fast and easy. From the southwest corner of the pond the majority of traffic appeared to head uphill, but I turned north following the edge of the pond. This route would be very wet in summer but when frozen, its an excellent choice. The crossings of Lincoln Brook were dicey looking but not a problem. Lots of running water and bizarre floes but the ice was thick enough to hold me no problem. First time on Brutus. The steeps after the skitter trail were practically free of snow as they face south-ish and I was worried about losing the route. There were traces of people going in lots of directions. Followed my gut and found the traverse to the Owl's Head path perfectly with no wandering. Unfortunately, the bushwhack routes are barely discernible with the hard snow pack, so with only a couple inches of fresh snow, the next parties will have no route finding clues. Good luck! Just under 7 hours car to car.
