We left from Lincoln Woods, took the Ed Hawkins Black Pond whack to the Lincoln Brook trail then headed on up and took the slide to the top. I had the Hawkins Black Pond whack saved on my GPS. It takes you out to the the Lincoln Brook crossing. Coming back from Lincoln Brook toward Black Pond there is an extended herd trail and this whack takes you right to it.

I have never seen the Lincoln Brook trail as wet as it was today. There were extended stretches where the water ran down the trail and also a lot of mud.

The three upper crossing were all difficult. I managed to rock hop the first two but I went a long ways upstream looking for a good crossing on the third and finally just took my shoes off and waded across. On the way back I went down stream a ways a found a spot where I could rock hop across. However, on the second crossing my foot slipped of a rock and I went in up to my knees with both feet. Made the third crossing alright. On the way back I met a father and son coming up the trail. They had taken the trails all the way. The father told me his son waded through waist deep water when crossing Franconia Brook.

The slide is wet in places but it was never particularly difficult. The trail is good to the old summit. From there to the new summit it's a bit every man for himself. The herd trails go here and there and you take one or the other. It's too bad. A trail should be cut to the new summit to eliminate all the herd trails.

On the way down we took the Brutus Whack which worked well although it's not as fast as in the winter.

Back at the Lincoln Brook crossing I decided to try the Fisherman's Whack. It's OK. The herd trail appears, disappears and reappears again continually. As you near Franconia Falls there is a pretty well defined herd trail and of course once in the area of the falls there is an official trail.

There was plenty of water on the entire hike for Lauky. I never had to pull out his water bottle. After the hike we went to Lincoln and I bought him two hamburgers to celebrate the day. :)

I'll just add this note, my "new" Synvisc One knee, did very well.
