trails: lincoln woods trail, franconia brook trail, bushwack, owls head path, lincoln brook trail
conditions: mostly dry along lincoln woods trail. muddy spots on franconia brook trail. bushwacked up the east side of owls head through open woods much of the way getting tighter with some blowdown around the ridge. a maze of herd paths developing on the ridge between the old and new summits. occasionally damp along owls head path, but nice and dry for the most part on the slide. lincoln brook trail had its usual wet and muddy foot bed though the section between the lower crossings is in nice shape. water crossings could all be rock hopped with wet feet on the lower lincoln brook and franconia brook crossings. where we crossed to begin the bushwack, beyond hellgate brook crossing, franconia brook was channeled out more deeply and we had to wade across. few if any bothersome bugs today. cairn at the summit and two at the bottom of the herd path. hard to miss.
equipment: navigational tools for bushwack.
comments: a beautiful day to be out hiking. first time on the east side of owls head and enjoyed seeing the old rail grade and tote roads on the slopes. some nice occasional views back to the bonds. we also scouted a perfect location for the rumored amc owls head hut just below the ridge. nice temps and a wonderful breeze all day long. thanks to cynthia and tim for a great day.
