2nd time returning after I swore that I was never going back! Offered to escort Roy on his 48 finish, so looks like I'm going back. Will leave Lincoln Woods no later than 7AM, hoping for Black Pond and Brutus bushwhacks. Spent 3 hours breaking out the slide last time :( Let me know if you are interested ... whitemtns48 at yahoo dot com.

I may be interested as well. Thanks for puting the invite out there.

What kind of mileage are we looking at with those bushwhack short cuts?

Have a good weekend,

Z

Trip is still on as planned. Will be interesting after the weather this week - snow >> rain/wind >> cooler. Will be leaving LW at 7AM on Friday morning.

Even with the Black Pond whack you're going to run into trouble with the upper crossings and it's a long ways to walk in only to have to turn around just short of the summit. It's one thing to wade those streams in the summer and another to do it at this time of year.

Personally I would put off for a while any project involving a significant stream crossing. Not just the one you have in mind, the North Twin trail is another one that will be difficult.

From AMC regarding Zealand Hut: impassable conditions to the hut due to stream crossing. For Carter: the conditions say shin-deep crossings at streams, and it is not recommended.

I wonder how many other trails will be affected?

Comrade Fredski: Great Soviet Hiking and Climbing Team is wishing you much success, and hoping you are having stream crossings that do not resemble a raging Russian river.......Nostrovya!!

Good luck with your hike tomorrow. Here's hoping for OK river crossings for your gang (only partially because that means they'll be good for me come Sunday :D)

I did a crazy whack off Franconia Ridge once to Owlie by only crossing the North fork of Liberty Brook and then the Lincoln Brook above its junction with Liberty Brook. It made for an interesting trip and I did it in order to determine its viability to avoid dangerous crossings down low as well as finding a retreat for potential ridge storms. It adds alot of elevation gain especially if as an out and back reclimbing the ridge. Going by the normal whacks is going to be wet even in places not normally ponding. I would recommend not going by trail at the Franconia Brook crossings. If the crossing is tricky at the junction with Liberty Brook go up Liberty a ways on the old rr bed and cross where its safe then back down the other side and follow Lincoln Brook up to a safe spot. This will not necessarily be the normal trail crossing. Hopefully it stayed snowbridged and none of this matters but the two worst crossing using the Black Pond Whack are about seven miles deep in the woods! Be safe and have fun!
