Trail Conditions: Lincoln Woods trail dry, Franconia Brook and Lincoln Brook trails some muddy spots, but not bad at all. The trail above the slide, to the summit, is very rough and wet and slippery. It's a bit tricky with lots of side paths. As you head up, bear left at any forks and you'll end up ok. The slide going down felt very treacherous and slippery to me (both in the woods and on the rocks). On a wet day, take extra care.
All stream crossings easy and not problematic. Easy rock hopping, nothing daunting.
Special Equipment Required: Even though you don't *need* poles on this one, I used them this time and it seemed to make a difference in overall fatigue. It's a long walk (18 miles) and the poles just give you a bit of support.
Comments: I did this hike because I "had to" as it's part of my second 48, and there were lots of other 48ers out on the trail, but really, it's a slog. That said, if you like being in green and dappled woods for long stretches, then this provides that kind of scenery. (note, congrats to the hiker who was doing it as the last of his THIRD 48)
