We hiked up from the trailhead on County Rte 47 starting around 10am on Saturday 1/3/09. Our route was up past Giant Ledges to Panther Mountain summit and back. The conditions were tricky but doable. Some had snowshoes, crampons, and stable-icers. I think the stable-icers were the best bet, though the crampons were nice to have on some of the steeper, icier sections. It was snowy enough in some areas that snowshoes were nice, but it was shallow enough in many places that walking in snowshoes (or crampons for that matter) on the rocky surface was uncomfortable. Nevertheless it was a beautiful day. Conditions: Mixed ice / snow / mud / rock.
