Hi,
can anybody confirm what it costs now to park at Lowes store? I parked there in 2001 and it cost $1 but I've been told it's $10 now.

I parked there a few weeks ago and we left before they opened. For two cars for two days, we left 10 bucks b/c we weren't sure what the charge was. During our trip, Storm (the Grey Knob caretaker) told us it was $1 per day per car.

when we got down, we checked in with Lowe and he tried to tell us it was $10 even. Not trying to beat him out of a few dollars but wanting to find out for the future, we casually said, "that's not what Storm said" and he chuckled and said, well okay, it's $1 per car per day.

I realize he provides a great service for next to nothing, but I didn't appreciate him flat out lying to us. Had he told us what it was up front, I would have been apt not to ask for our change.

where did you hear about the 10$$

I was told by an employee of the Cog that Lowes had gone up to $10 for the winter. That's why they went from $5 to $10....hmmmmmmm

Great story Spencer, he is a character. ;)

I can't complain even if its 10 for 2 days - its his place, provides an amazing service, I am never worried about breakins there and I always thought a buck was way to low for what they provide - maybe it depends on who is working. I think even 5 bucks per day is a steal.

How is "Lowe" charging whatever he wants "flat out lying"?

Afka Bob,

The "chuckle" followed by the . . . "well, okay, it's $1 per car per day" sounds like a "lie of sorts" does it not? He may charge whatever he wants, it is his lot, but I for one respect people being up front with me and not trying to "pull one over on me" . . . Just my humble opinion, take it for what it is worth (which is probably not much :D )

Fair enough.

Of course, for your own part, your use of the term "lie of sorts" sounds like a step back from "flat out lie."

Oops, sorry, I see that Spencer first used the term "flat out lie," which just seems a bit strong to me.

For whatever it's worth, Lowe's doesn't carry beer. Or, at least they didn't last time I was there. I spent one extremely hot day staring at the store from the summit and the way down, just waiting for a beer. I was stunned when I found out "Randolph's a dry town". Gggrrrrr.....

I guess that's why I wrote "I was stunned when I found out "Randolph's a dry town" " in my post.....

I suspect the gentleman who almost paid $10 was the victim of some classic backwoods yankee humor rather than any particular intent to scam.

What a great feeling...

I love getting out of my car in the early morning at a Trail Head (favorite is Lowe's) gearing up and looking up to where I'm going to be in several long hours of hiking. It's kinda like the feeling XMAS morning back as a kid when you wake up and you in your bed and you know that in just a couple of minutes PRESENTS! It's the same great feeling of excitment of whats to come!

As late as last week, they have charged me a dollar a day. It’s ridiculously cheap, they are very nice people and I don’t worry about my car. I wish there was a Lowes at all the places I leave my car overnight.

I remember stopping in the store to pay for parking when the senior Lowe was still alive, back about 15 or more years ago. He used to always sit in that rocker next to the small wood stove in the store. My friend Kelley asked him if he ever climbed up the path named for his family. The response was "Been there once, looked around. No need to go back." There's a family with some history.
