Name of mountain(s): Peak Above the Nubble and Haystack (Nubble) Bushwhack
Hike date(s): 11/28/04
Weather and trail conditions: It was overcast all day. The sun looked like it was going to come out but it never did.
Total miles hiked: 4.6
Trip report: I met Don L., Dick M. and Darcy at the beginning of Haystack Rd. around 8:20am. We went and parked our cars at a campsite on Haystack Rd. We geared up and started up a logging road. When we could see Haystack Mtn., we started bushwhacking.
The bushwhack was easy to begin with. Soon we came to a brook and climbed up on its side. Soon we were back in the woods and it became thick. Once we got out of the thick stuff, we were at an old campground that had several moose antlers hanging on strings from tree limbs. Don told me the name of that campsite but I forgot what it was. Pretty soon we were at the base of Haystack Mtn. We started up but the wind was very strong. We didn’t go up Haystack due to the wind so we continued to the Peak Above the Nubble.
It started to get real steep, and it was thick in spots.
When we got to the top, we had to search for the canister. Dick had his GPS with the map of the area so he checked it to see where the canister was. It took us about 10 minutes before we found the canister.
The top of the canister was frozen. After a couple of tries, I got it open. We checked for the last entry, and it was 11/2/04. I signed all our names and Don added a few things to it.
It was real creepy at the canister. The wind was blowing the top of the tree where the canister was so hard that it looked like it would snap the tree. The ground was shaking due to the roots of the tree that was being blown around. Several other trees around the canister were doing the same thing. We rushed to close up the canister so we could get off the summit.
As soon as we got out of the wind, we took a break.
The descent went pretty fast. On the way down we went to the right of the thick stuff, so we wouldn’t have to go through it again. We went back to Haystack Mtn.. We dropped our packs and headed up. The wind was blowing really hard. It almost knocked me over several times. Dick made it to the summit and had to lean into the wind. Also it started to rain and the wind made the rain horizontal. It felt like little pebbles hitting me in the face. Because the wind was so fierce, the rest of us didn't go up to the top. We had to battle the wind for a bit before we got back into the woods. The hardest part of the descent was going down the slide.
We got back to the cars at 1:20pm
It was a short, but excellent bushwhack. 47/100
