A few inches of hard-packed snow near Peekamoose Road increased to a foot or so above 3500' and between the mountains. Snowshoes might have been helpful above 3500', but the snow was hard enough to support weight even off the trail (they would've been a definite liability below Reconnoiter Rock). My brother wore stabilicers and I bare-booted, as there was surprisingly little ice on the trail. Clear skies permitted nice views all day, though it was too cold to stand or sit around for long. We broke "trail" up the summit boulder of Peekamoose and over the short herd path leading to the westward view beyond Table. I got to watch a sunrise and a sunset, a moonrise and a moonset, Venus and what I'm guessing was Mercury. A great winter day in the Catskills...
