You just gotta make it interesting. There's a thread in General Backcountry on rain gear, and one on soft-shell pants: you could mention how it's irresponsible to hike without rain gear, or that soft-shell pants have been shown to lead to unnecessary SARs. It's true!

So, I've had 3 beers so take this for what it is worth. Basically what I get from this is tell whomever you leave behind that you have all your gear, can take care of yourself, don't call anyone unless it has been a few days. Take your chances, live a little.

Water comes up fast in the Pemi. I learned that the hard way. Good lesson. What's next?
