The website stubbornly refuses to divulge any useful information, but there are some clues that the uplink is via a cellular network. Notably, there's a "coverage map" that shows significant gaps in in places like the Presidential Range and the Adirondacks.

Garmin sells what appears to be a similar product (GTU 10, https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=209&pID=67686) using the cellphone system to report the pet's location. Obviously, any tracker that relies on the cellphone system is of limited use in the hills.

They also sell a product for tracking hunting dogs (Astro 220, https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=209&pID=8576) which uses MURS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-Use_Radio_Service) radio (151, 154 MHZ) to send the location from a remote to a GPS-like receiver. This might only have a range of a mile or less in heavy cover, but even a fraction of a mile would make finding a lost dog much easier. This would be more appropriate for tracking a hiking dog.

I have no experience with either product.

Just saw this one on the news today.

I don't think I will need to invest in any of these with Molly. She has a "guerilla glue" problem. I can't pry her off me. She's closer than my own shadow! :D It's a Bernese Mountain Dog thing. Bernie was the same way.

Also an Aussie thing...:)...if I lost one of my dogs it would be because they were stolen. Actually, Terra *did* find a hole in our fence (now repaired) when she was home with Michael one afternoon and patrolled the neighborhood for a short while -- worst train ride home ever for me until he called to say he had her safe and sound!!!! I can't imagine what Kamala's peeps went through. :-(
