Date of Hike: November 28, 2008
Trail Conditions: Phelps Trail from the Garden to Johns Brook Lodge is well tracked out. We broke trail from JBL to Slant Rock through approx. 1 foot of snow. We broke trail from Slant Rock to the Haystack-Marcy col through 2 feet of snow. The snow was light and powdery. Stream crossings were not a problem.
Special Equipment Required: We used snowshoes after Bushnell Falls. They were essential past Slant Rock. Since we did not make it to the Haystack summit, not sure whether crampons are required to summit but I would guess yes.
Comments: It took us 5 hours to get from the Garden trailhead to the Marcy-Haystack col since we had to break trail through 2 feet of snow and there were only two of us. We did not make it to the summit of Haystack. Neither trail to Haystack or Marcy was broken out from the Haystack-Marcy col. Someone take advantage of our work before it snows!
