I'm making a photobook so I downloaded and am experimenting with the first one I found with Google, Booksmart from Blurb.

You choose from a wide assortment of page layouts and insert photos and text. Once your done you upload the whole thing. They print them at 300 dpi.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience or had any comments.

I use Blurb to make photobooks of my best hiking pictures each year. The books come out really nice. So far, I've always made softcover books, but I'm going to try making a hardcover book for my 2008 pictures at the end of the year.

The books come out great and seem to get a great reception.

Neil, I can recommanded you to use Photoinpress.
I used personally them to make a book from our trek to Nepal. And several friends in my photo club, use this place. It is professional quality, look like a book you buy in a library. It is very fast delivery and it is in Montreal.
If you need more info PM me.

I had Apple photo books made for my honey, Susan, in 2003 and ’04.

Pretty expensive, and my iPhoto (and operating system, for that matter) is now several versions behind the standard, so I can no longer even upload photos onto my .Mac Web page.

In 2005, I made my own prints and mounted them in a couple of those multi-picture frames. Came out pretty well.

I keep thinking I’ll try a book from Shutterfly or some other company, but I haven’t yet.

I downloaded Photoinpress and tried it out but preferred working with Blurb's software.

Anyway, I got my book in the mail this week and it's perfect. I was worried about resolution, coloration, darkness etc. but the pics turned out exactly as they appeared on screen. Exactly. Even the full page ones.

Everyone who has seen the book is blown away by it.

I think you can preview the first 10 pages of it -HERE-.

I have done 2 books with Blurb and I am working on a 3rd right now (I hope to have it done in time for my upcoming gallery shows).

The first book I did as a softcover and as a 8x10 hardcover with dust jacket. I liked the hard cover much better. It is well worth the extra $10. It is a book that I did for my friend who wanted the entire process of his luau (doing the emu etc) documented. The preview is online at:

The second book I did, general photography, is a 11x13 hardcover with image wrap. I really like how it came out. Bigger IS better, and I really like the image wrap instead of the dust jacket. The preview is online at:

My third book, which will be about 120 pages of my best shots from Hawaii, will be an 11x13 hardcover, image wrap. The 11x13 harcover image wrap books are not cheap (like $80 each with shipping) but I think it is worth it to have a collection of important photos in one place.

My only gripe is that it would be nice if they used thicker paper. The thin paper they use creases easily when people look at the book. (yes I am one of those people that like to take care of books, don't ask me why)

Aloha
