Trail conditions: Sherburne Trail is a bit bumpy, but barebootable to the first ski trail crossing. From there you will want snowshoes to the summit. We broke out from the ski trail crossing to Pico Camp (mostly, there was a bit that had a single track that headed upwards partway) and then up to the upper ski trail crossing -- then took the ski trails the rest of the way because the going was a lot easier.
Special equipment:Snow shoes a must. Balaclava was helpful as it was pretty windy on the ski trails and summit.
Comment: Saw one other hiker who also picked Pico for a winter solstice hike. Pretty sunset from the top.... and a great choice for a hike with a late start.
