Howdy!

Has anyone ever been to the dc-9 that crashed out in the woods back in the 1940's. I think it is on the lower peak of Success mountain. Also is there a trail to it or is it a bushwack.

Dc-3

It was a Northeast Airlines DC-3 and it crashed Dec. 1, 1954 on approach to the Berlin airport. My dad was in the Civil Air Patrol at the time and flew in the search for it. I visited the site several years ago. It's in the woods somewhat south of the summit and seventy to a hundred yards or so east of the main trail. At the time I visited, there was a pretty substantial herd path to the site.

The "herd path" is pretty thick brush; I was up there last summer and 4 years ago; both times there was no sign of any path and it's more or less a bushwhack. I believe there are yellow blazes on some trees for survey purposes (not a trail) but they're hard to find. PM me and I can try to send you some GPS coords I took the last time I was up there.

It was probably 5 or 6 years ago that I was there and it was an easily followable herd path at the time. Finding it was the hardest part, but once found it was pretty well worn (and rather muddy). I recall survey markers near the crash site and a rough path leading down the hill away from the crash site, as well. I think the survey markers were to mark the boundary of the AT land.

Anything valuable was hauled away by a salvage crew decades ago. The fusilage and wings and some engine parts are still there.
