Blueberry Ledge Trail, Rollins Trail, Dicey's Mill Trail.

About twelve miles roundtrip.

It's almost time to go highpointing again! The girls and I have plans to hike Mt. Marcy, the tallest mountain in New York, next weekend. I've been debating on whether or not to make that hike a daytrip or a backpack...a daytrip means I don't have to carry three sleeping bags and a tent, but it also means that the girls and I have to cover fifteen miles in one day. Alex can handle that, but Sage...?

In order to better make a decision, I chose a difficult hike for this week's 4K(s). Ascending both Whiteface and Passaconaway means tromping up and down twelve miles of trail and covering 3800 feet of elevation gain. Mt. Marcy is fifteen miles roundtrip with either 3800 or 3100 feet of elevation gain (depending on the source), so I figured if Sage could handle the Whiteface/Passaconaway loop, then she'd be good to go for Mt. Marcy. Also, highpointing rules differ from 4K rules; if I end up carrying her down Mt. Marcy, she can still count the peak for highpointing purposes.

I explained the plan to the girls, and they agreed the loop would make a good prep hike for Marcy. The next morning, off we went.

The parking area at Ferncroft...

The trail signs...

The bridge with the "hikers welcome" sign (love that!)...

The beginning of the trail is packed dirt with easy to moderate grades. Then come the initial ledges through the woods...

...then some more dirt...

...and some rock steps here and there...

...and then, the serious ledges.

I've no pictures of the seriously steep ledges since it's difficult to spot two children and a dog while holding a camera. Let's just say this bit requires some extended scrambling.

Once at the top of the ledges, one is treated to views...

...then it's onward and into the trees for the summit.

After eating our customary chocolate, we headed toward Passaconaway. Rollins Trail was a relatively easy stretch, just 2.4 miles of mostly packed dirt...

We reached the intersection with Dicey's Mill and headed up...

There are nice views near the summit...

...though the summit itself is in the trees.

...and we weren't sure whether the highest point was here...

...or here.

We went back to the viewpoint and ate some more chocolate. The girls seemed in fine spirits -- so far, so good. The Marcy-in-a-day plan looked more feasible by the hour.

Down we went on the relatively smooth Dicey's Mill Trail.

Fatigue set in a mile from the trailhead, but all four of us made it out in relatively good cheer.

So, Marcy-in-a-day it is. We'll start early and take it slowly next weekend...plus, we'll have the good company of Cumulus from RocksonTop. Should be a fine time, looking forward to it.

Congrats to Sage for being halfway through the NH4Ks! 24 White Mountains down, 24 to go.

Next stop: highpoint #36, New York's Mt. Marcy.

Just went recently, 14 miles and a little over 3,200' of climbing. The Loj is around 2100', the summit is 53xx. There is a small amount of down climbing here are there.

Good Luck!

The trail to Marcy is a long and gradual hike, the sun is coming up early and setting late, you have lots of time. The bugs should be going away during this dry spell. You can rest at Marcy Dam, and get water, on the way up and back. It's a heavly traveled trail and there is a Peak Steward to talk to on top. If they can walk 1-2 mph all day they should be fine. It would be a very rewarding hike for them. :)

Ditto, the cone on Marcy is not a tough scramble.

Tom and Little Rickie, thanks for your input! There's a very good chance Sage will be able to handle this completely on her own, but I'm not 100% sure. My back will appreciate it if Sage hikes the whole thing, but I'll pick her up if she starts to look like/act like/tell me that she's had enough. Or we'll take a hundred million breaks and hike out after dark. :)

The girls will enjoy speaking with the Steward, and Marcy Dam looks beautiful. Sounds like a great hike and we're looking forward to it.

Marcy Dam Pond is pretty, for a manmade pond. The best part is the views; it's ready made for photo ops. On the way up, also enjoy the views of the MacIntyre range from Indian Falls, just a few steps off the trail. Bring sock changes for all, just in case the boardwalk at the plateau just below Marcy's cone is still underwater. Also on the way, you'll pass the spur trails for Phelps and for Tabletop. Those should be intriguing as "something to come back for." Have fun!

You'll really like Marcy. I always enjoy the view of the summit approach as you come out of the trees and start up the shoulder. Similar experience as Moosilauke. Good luck !

TCD, Chip and eddie -- thank you for the insights and information! :D We're very much looking forward to this, and the weather is supposed to be perfect. Can't wait!

Maybe you know this, but Indian Falls is a must stop place. You can get water, cool off, and see great views. Just 200' to the right off the main trail.

Absolutely stop at Indian Falls! Fantastic views of the MacIntyre Range and Colden! And it's a great place to take off the boots and cool your feet, change socks, etc. Also good spot to pump water if you need to. June 30 the trail was relatively dry all the way. Boardwalk referred to above wasn't wet at all. A minor little log crossing to get across Marcy Brook above Indian Falls...we're talking two steps on the log and you're across (water less than a foot deep).

Here's a pic from Indian Falls, but it doesn't really capture it.

I know you'll have a great hike. I've never found Marcy particularly difficult, it's just that there is that longggg walk in before you really get climbing.

The first part of the trail is so smooth you could push a baby stroller on it.

One downside when climbing from the LOJ is the parking fee for non members. The last time I went I saved some money by having my wife drop me off and pick me up at the end of the day.

Wish I could be there. I love that hike. Lauky loved it too and as I remember someone we met on the trail over there even recognized him. :)

Marcy

Good luck and have FUN. Peg and I will be looking for your report.
We are leaving for Utah on Monday to climb Belknap (12,135 what else:))
We hope to do Marcy on the way home. Happy Trails.

Thanks for all the tips and well-wishes, everyone!

We did the hike in one day yesterday. Had the pleasure of meeting up with Cumulus and sharing a nice amount of time on the summit with him.

The weather was sunny and dry, and the views were spectacular.

Alex handled the mileage with no problems whatsoever, I think she could now do Owls Head or Isolation in a day with relative ease.

Max did well too. I expected to carry him on the descent, but I never needed to pick him up (except when giving him a boost over a ledge every once in a while). Though he seemed to be getting tired near the end, his tail never stopped wagging and he was extremely well-behaved. He used to thrown mini-trantrums whenever I kept him from jumping on others, now he understands what's expected and makes a great little canine companion. He handled the ledges and rocks like a mountain goat. He also enjoyed his first motel stay, though he didn't appreciate it when we went to breakfast without him (he ate half a Kleenex in protest). :)

Sage did extremely well on the way up, leading the way and setting a fast pace that had us leapfrogging many adult groups. On the way down, however, she hit a wall at the eleven mile mark. I carried her off and on from that point on, and we took breaks at all the water crossings. She always felt much better after sticking her bare feet in the water and making a small cairn or two. In the future, however, in order to keep things positive and happy for the entire hike, we'll now backpack anything over ten or eleven miles if Sage is with us. She made it and she was fine, but I'd much rather have everyone happy the whole time than ever reach a point where someone feels overwhelmed and too tired.

Indian Falls was beautiful! We spent a lot of time there on the way up.

Hal and Peg, have a fantastic trip! Looking forward to hearing all about it when you return!

Ed, now going to check out your recent highpointing post...

Ditto! and I'm glad your kiddo's made it out ok!

They did, thanks. Alex was happy the whole way, it was Sage who was "done" early. She perked up quite a bit after she dunked her feet in the water, and I carried her off and on. She's proud of herself for reaching the top, but we both agree that we should keep future dayhikes to ten miles or less. I try to make sure the girls enjoy their hikes by not overdoing it according to their individual capabilities...this one went past Sage's comfort level in terms of hiking on her own two feet.

I think that was me! On our first Marcy ascent in 2009. :)
