We woke up Sunday to this view of Mt. Washington. I could see those clouds moving across the summit, so I knew it was windy up there! After a delicious breakfast in Twin Mt., we set off in search of our 2nd climb of the weekend. After counting birds while climbing Jackson/Webster on Saturday, we wanted something not too long or strenuous before the long drive back to NY. We found a short fire tower hike to be the perfect choice. The tower is located in Weeks State Park. The 1.5 mile long road is gated and unplowed in Winter, but this sounded just right for us. We found the trailhead on Rt. 3, crossed the road, and put on our snowshoes. (Probably not necessary but useful for traction). The road was easy going. There was a hard packed path all the way up. The price to pay for this is the road winds around interminably! It was tempting to take a 'short cut' up the power line slash, but thankfully, we did not, as it turned out the power lines do not run to the summit!
There are a couple of view points along the way, and we stopped at each to admire the vistas:
Pressies in the distance
Closeup of the Pressies - Does anyone know if you can photo-shop out water marks?
In any case, I love how the mountains seem suspended above the rest of the landscape.
It didn't take long to reach the top where the stone tower and the Weeks mansion stands. Mr Weeks had great views!
Coming down, we met a man with 2 dogs who told us he hikes up almost every day. He's a lucky man!
We finished off the day with a trip to Jasper Murdoch's in Norwich for lunch, and a visit to Chez Pamola for some tasty beers!
The ride home was snow free! When we got back to our driveway, there was only a dusting here and there. The great blizzard has stayed completely to our South!
