After a long day in the woods/driving on Sunday, i watched a Celtics/Miami game 3 replay, got another night of 4 hours sleep :) and headed up to Rockwood area for unfinished business. I was there 2 weeks ago and found too much snow (at least for me)

Pt 2161-2161':)-lies north of Rockwood (on Moosehead Lake). I drove up the "20 mile" Road about 15 miles toward Pittston Farm (neat place) -the road is in very rough shape- rutted, potholed, very muddy and washed out in spots; much worse than usual-supposedly because a logger worked in there after road was posted this Spring--long, slow, bit of white knuckle drive.

When i got to a logging road where i planned to walk about 3 miles in, i found it dry and pretty smooth for almost 2 miles-bonus. Treated to my first close up view of a fox family-mother? and 3 kits.

The drive ended at snowmobile packed snow on the last stretch of road, but i headed to and up the small peak with little trouble-logging and then heavily overgrown skid roads to the top-sunny, lo 40s, very windy. The hike was a small joy. This unremarkable, unnamed, unloved hill provided ever changing panoramas in all directions because of past lumbering activity and leafless hardwoods. Moosehead Lake, the mountains around Greenville/Kokadjo with Katahdin looming in the distance. The prominence peaks by their very nature often provide pleasant surprises.

Out 20 Mile, back to Rockwood and to

Blue Ridge-1867'-The view across Moosehead Lake was nice with sizable whitecaps whipped by the wind. If you're ever up here, take the small "ferry" across the lake to Mt Kineo (on an island), climb it (short/worthwhile-tower with walkable steps) and get next ferry back-$10 i think...anyway..

I had no idea how to climb Blue Ridge except take a dirt road a little way up the north side of the ridge from route 15 and then just go for it. I ran into a local who asked what i was up to. When i showed him my proposed straight up route, he suggested another approach, longer and into the notch SW of the peak, but avoiding the thickest going-worked like a charm- very easy woods most of the way-somewhat open evergreen top with no views--easy, fun.

I was considering yet a 3rd hike, but was a bit whipped (and very sleepy) after the past two days and decided to head home a bit early
