Can anyone tell me which baccountry campsites other than Franconia Brook
allow campfires? Will be backpacking with my daughters and when it is chilly, we like a fire at night.
Thank you for any info you may have

Official Backcountry Camping rules

The only places that prohibit fires are the Great Gulf Wilderness and Cutler River drainage. All other areas it is allowed but discouraged. You must use the firering at the shelter/campsite and take care in gathering wood (no standing wood). In some areas you will have to take a long walk to find downed wood, they might be picked clean.

Thanks Dave. Was thinking about heading up to the sites near Mizpah hut, this WE. Just returned to backpacking after many years of car camping till the kids could carry their own stuff. Forgot where we could and could not have 'atmosphere'.

Unless you need a built latrine, I would suggest that instead of using a designated site you find your own in one of the Forest areas that allows it. There is plenty of wood lying around once you get away from official campsites, and the kids can make all the racket they want without disturbing anybody but you :)

"Have to Have one?"

Mark aren't those two "Fire Bugs" in your arms? When I camp with my grandson all he can say is granpa we need to get the fire started. Then it's the fire needs more wood.
Yes I know about the impact, respondibilities, but where premitted there nothing like sitting round a camp fire telling war stories at night or the peace of one early in the morning with a cup of coffee and some good reading.

Firebugs

Sweeper, my firebugs enjoy the campfire but it's always been when car-camping or at home. I agree, there's nothing like a roaring campfire but I haven't kindled one in the backcountry (not that I wouldn't if there was a real need). My boys will have to enjoy sitting around the MSR stove otherwise. :)
