I saw a huge bird flying around Mt. Chocorua yesterday. It was being harrassed by a raven, which was dwarfed by the big bird. Are they still migrating? Do some stay all year? Guesses about what it was? It never came close enough to me to see any detail other than size. The raven was about the size of one wing.

I also got mooed at by a moose, short cow-like grunts coming from a thick stand of spruce, while bushwacking. It moved closer, mooed a few more times, then retreated in a trot. I never saw it, though. :)

Happy Trails!

Lots of Turkey Buzzards in the MWV in general. They are at the Conway Town Dump alot. Maybe one was out for a jaunt or could have been migrating.
I saw a flock of Canadien Geese headed south when I was hiking in the Green Hill Perserve. Birds are definitely still migrating in general.

Yes, migration seems later than usual this year. I heard the honkers overhead this week too. Franconia got its first real hard frost last night, turning everything white this morning. If Wilma comes up, though, it will warm it up again.

A few questions...was it flapping alot? Where there white patches under the wing. Did it hold its wings in wide "V" and rock in the air?

At first blush I would side with skiguy, however a bald eagle is very strong possibility.

Yes there is still alot of migration right now, The broad wings are done, you will not see them until the spring. the merlins should be in good numbers and the eagles still trickle through.
