On Friday we tried to follow the Ratle River Trail to the top of Shelburn Moria but did not make it. Getting to the shelter was easy as the trail was broken but after that it was not. The first crossing which is not too far from the shelter looked very dangerous, some ice, some ope water and some ice covered with snow. It was impossible to tell if the ice covered with snow was strong enough to walk on and we did not want to find out the hard way. We stayed along the east side of the river and tried to find the trail where it crossed back over but never found it. DO NOT FOLLOW OUR TRACKS ALONG THE EASR SIDE OF THE RIVER AS THEY LEAD TO NOW WHERE. After a few hrs of trying we went back to the shelter and spent the night.
If you want to try this hike you will need snow shoes, My advice is too wait until the river is safely frozen and cross it where the trail does. A GPS may also be helpful as this trail will most likely be unbroken
