Life was so much easier with film - Blame it on the lab!
Certainly easier for us users--film and developing were a small number of prepackaged objects or services. However, film was also highly technical: it can be described as being a solid suspension of silver halide crystals and photo-sensitive dyes on plastic substrate. Developing the technology and producing consistent good quality film could not have been an easy task. Similarly, there were many (chemical) developers to choose from and someone had to work out the details.

The biggest difference might be that more of the detailed info is available to us laymen (via the internet and picture processing programs) whereas it used to be much harder to get. (And even if we got the info, we often couldn't do anything with it.)
