Inspired by Amicus' trip report, I decided Red Hill wouold provide a short snow shoe hike with much bang for the buck. I was not dissapointed. Weather was clear cold and pretty windy at the summit. It was so windy I was reluctant to go all way up the tower for fear if my hat with the brim blowing off. The new trail is marvelous. Snow is 12-16" deep even at summit area. The new trail is not well traveled so it was bit messy from bare booters. The new trail follows snow mobile trail part of the way. I only saw one party on snow mobiles otherwise I had snow mobile trail all to my self. I recommend doing this loop counterclockwise so you come down the new trail and can enjoy the views all way down. Going up the new trail, you will be facing the uphill trail. Going down footing is good so you can just worry about taking in the views of Squam Lake. Doing the trail Clockwise you might have hard time noticing where the new trail takes off from the snow mobile trail. I didn't notice any signage for the new trail so it could be hard to find in fresh snow fall conditions. Round Trip time is 2.5 hours.
