RIVER CROSSINGS MAY BE VERY DANGEROUS! On Saturday, Uphill Brook was in flood stage due to t-storms and we needed to bushwhack certain sections. Even some minor tributary crossings required care. Water within 4 feet of the bottom of the Opalescent suspension bridge near Lake Colden. A fall into the river would have resulted in certain death.
Trail from Upper Works to Flowed Lands clear for the first 3.5 miles. Final mile to Flowed Lands has sections of glazed ice. Flowed Lands to Lake Colden is clear. Lake Colden to suspension bridge is clear. Bridge to Uphill Lean-To is partly clear, and partly a walkable snow spine. Uphill Lean-To to the brook is clear. The final mile to the summit was a horrible, eroding, hip-deep snow spine.
We bare-booted. My lower legs are bruised from post-holing so many times. Thought about donning my stabilicers, but they would have been torn off and lost forever on one of the postholes. Snow spine too narrow for snowshoes.
