I am not a "serious" redliner, but decided that I had gone up the Valley Way to the hut far too often; time for something new!
I left Appalachia from the eastern end of the parking lot on the Fallsway Trail, which stays much closer to Snyder Brook than the Valley Way does. Passed Gordon, Lower and Upper Salroc and Tama Falls, then rejoined the Valley Way. A short distance after that I took the Brookside Trail. First crossing is on a bridge, second crossing was quite easy today. Lovely trail, again stays closer to Snyder Brook than the Valley Way. Passes Salmacis Fall before joining the Watson Path near Bruin Rock, just before Duck Fall. Followed Watson Path for a short distance, then took the Lower Bruin to rejoin the Valley Way, which I followed to the hut.
The falls are certainly not spectacular at this time of the year, but they are very pleasant. Most of the Brookside Trail has good footing and easy grades, though higher up it gets considerably rougher, as is the Lower Bruin.
Excellent potato-dill soup at the hut
